Sitting inside on a rainy day

A thought just occurred to me.

In all the kerfuffle about the McCains lying about how Mother Teresa herself implored Cindy to take two babies to America for medical treatment, I just realized - Cindy McCain brought TWO babies to the United States. One she adopted and is now Bridget McCain - whatever happened to the other one?

The strange thing about all this is the lie itself. Cindy McCain goes over there, one of the nuns 'persuades' her to take some kids home for medical treatment that they wouldn't be able to get locally, Cindy agrees. How does lying about it being Mother Teresa herself asking you make you look better? I mean, the nun has to persuade you to take this poor child for medical treatment when you're a multi-millionaire - the idea didn't occur to you on your own to use your money to help these less fortunate, you had to be 'persuaded'? Good for you for bringing them to the US, good for you for adopting one. You have 7 houses (two more that other people live in) - you could have paid for a thousand children to be adopted by other people around the world who want children. Don't expect too much in the way of acclaim. A quote from one of my favorite movies: "You have been born to privilege, and with that comes specific obligations."

I agree that she shouldn't deserve a special award, or need to be persuaded.

But is it really the obligation of the rich or privileged to take care of the needy? Maybe yes if you inherited everything and have never worked in your life. Maybe no if you worked hard your entire life and built everything from nothing.

Where do we draw the line between wealth and obligation?

Yeah, but think if it actually was Mother Theresa..

You'd be coming home with a lot more than 2, methinks..

She facilitated the adoption of the other little girl by another family that they were friends with apparently.

I don't think it's necessarily incumbent upon the wealthy to spend their money helping the poor. However, if you are going to go around touting yourself as a humanitarian in public it IS necessary for you to be doing quite a lot to help the poor. Cindy used to run a third world medical charity called AVM, but that stopped when she was caught kifing vicodin and percoset from the charity after becoming addicted following back surgery and due to the "stress" of her involvement in the Keating 5 scandal (she was a bookeeper for a shopping center that she and her father had invested in along with Keating).
John puts all of his book royalties into their family foundation, and Cindy puts in a small amount (proportianately) of her income as well. A lot of the money the Foundation gives out (about 1/3) has gone to elite educational institutions being attended by one or more of the McCain children. It also has contributed significant amounts of money to an anti-landmine charity and medical charities. Haven't had time to read it, but the 2006 and 2007 returns for the foundation are available on McCains website if anyone is interested.
